Daniel Sturridge released by Australian side Perth Glory

Former England striker Daniel Sturridge’s latest attempt to resurrect his career has ended in disappointment after being released by Perth Glory.

The 32-year-old joined the Australian club for the 2021-22 season but was released at the end of his contract following yet another injury-hit campaign.

The former Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool forward started just one of the six games that he played and also failed to score.

Perth Glory ended the campaign bottom of the 12-team A-League with four wins from 26 games.

Sturridge spent six and a half seasons at Liverpool, scoring 67 goals in 160 games before a loan move to West Brom for the second half of the 2017-18 season.

He moved to Turkey in the summer of 2019 as a free agent.

His three-year deal with Trabzonspor was terminated the following March as Sturridge was given a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules prior to his stint with Perth Glory.

Sturridge struggles to save a career cursed by injury

Sturridge’s departure from Perth Glory is another disappointing end to another bid to salvage a career that once saw him as Liverpool and England’s top striker.

A January 2013 move from Chelsea to Anfield saw Sturridge partnered with Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling in a devastating trio that almost led Brendan Rodgers’ team to the Premier League title the following season.

Sturridge scored 21 Premier League goals in that infamous season before wearing the number nine shirt for England and scoring for Roy Hodgson’s side in their unsuccessful 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Just 19 league goals followed for Sturridge in five further season at Anfield as injuries limited his involvement, and he left shortly after Jurgen Klopp’s side won the 2019 Champions League final in Madrid.

“Daniel has earned the right to be considered a modern-day Liverpool great, I would think,” Klopp said of Sturridge at the time.

“He is one of the best finishers I have ever seen in my life. He scores goals you think could and should not be possible.”
